History and Governance Page

SITV was formed in 1996 in response to widespread concern about high levels of crime in the Tees Valley. From the outset, we focused on bringing agencies together, thus pioneering the 'partnership' approach that has become the accepted model of working in the public sector.

Our first major impact arose from a successful bid for £7.5m from the Single Regeneration Challenge Fund. In addition to winning us wide recognition as an organisation, this funding encouraged the creation of partnerships that have provided the platform for a range of innovative projects – including many which have become widely accepted and applied as mainstream initiatives.

As we grew in stature and reputation, more and more partners sought to draw upon our expertise to initiate new - often innovative - areas of work. This in turn led to the development of the unique portfolio of specialist services necessary to provide them with effective support.

By the time SRB funding was discontinued, we had developed the means to generate sufficient income to maintain our independence and continue to further community safety and support relevant agencies in the Tees Valley. Initially a ‘not for profit’ company, we successfully applied for registered charity status in 2005, thus placing our position beyond question and opening up new opportunities to secure funding.

Today, SITV has more than 50 full-time staff and a turnover in excess of £2m. Our core role remains the support and development of community safety in the Tees Valley. Links with the five crime and disorder reduction partnerships are strong and productive and represent the collective commitment to reducing crime and improving quality of life in the Tees Valley.

For the future, we have now demonstrated that we have the expertise, backed by a unique portfolio of services, to take on a regional role at the heart of community safety.
