National Citizen Service help out at RSPB Saltholme

Posted : 26/09/2014

Over the summer, a group of school leavers took part in National Citizen Service delivered by Safe in Tees Valley (SITV). The group of teenagers have hand-built a range of sensory boxes in a bid to help a wider range of visitors enjoy RSPB Saltholme, near Middlesbrough.

Part of the National Citizen Service (NCS) programme involved the teenagers deciding on their own project to give something back to the community, and seeing it through from conception, through production, to delivery.

They chose to make sensory boxes, which engage the sense of touch rather than sight. The boxes are made entirely from recycled materials, which fits perfectly with RSPB Saltholme’s environmental standing as part of the UK’s biggest conservation charity. The boxes will be used to help families get the most out of their visit to the nature reserve.

David Braithwaite, site manager at RSPB Saltholme, said: “We’re delighted that that the teenagers in this initiative decided to choose us as beneficiaries of this project. The boxes are fantastic and will be well used, especially during our big events like the Halloween weekend coming up.”
