Young People lead a fantastic Digital Skills event with the elderly

Posted : 02/11/2015

Josh and Yacouba, Safe in Tees Valley's Microsoft Youth Hub IT Champions, planned and delivered an exceptional project at Burlam Road Care Home (Middlesbrough) yesterday afternoon. With the help of their peers, Rebecca and Cora from the Cleveland Police Cadet Programme and Chloe from the National Citizen Service (NCS) Graduate Programme, they passed on their digital skills to the elderly people to enable them to keep in touch with their friends / family members through email/ Skype. They also provided refreshments/ cakes and chatted to the residents in an informal setting. The young people also purchased a Microsoft Tablet as a gift for the care home to have a lasting benefit on this community so that the residents can put their new skills into action.

Sarah Parkes from UK Youth attended the event along with a film crew in order to capture some footage to produce a promotional video about their Microsoft Youth Hubs (of which Safe in Tees Valley is one). This film will be available from December 2015 so watch this space!

Sarah said "The event was really fantastic and it was a privilege to be there and see Josh, Yacouba and the girls hard at work. We had a look at some footage on the train home and the guys captured some great moments. Please pass my thanks onto Josh, Yacouba and Rebecca for taking the time to be interviewed, you’ll be glad to hear (and I’m sure, not surprised!) that they were all full of endless praise for Safe in Tees Valley!"

Cora said "There was an elderly man who was quite poorly, but we managed to set him up a personal email account. We then added his son (who lives in Canada), which then allowed them to communicate via Skype video call! The whole experience was overwhelming and emotional but at the same time so interesting and fantastic! It's a great feeling! Especially knowing you're making a difference to some one else's life!"
