Side by Side peer support programme

Posted : 26/01/2016

Safe in Tees Valley are working in partnership with Youth Focus North East, Time 4 You and Durham Tees Valley Community Rehabilitation Company (DTVCRC) to train DTVCRC service users with experience of mental health problems as peer supporters. The new peer supporters will offer mental health peer support to other DTVCRC service users.

The peer supporter-led programme will raise awareness about common mental health problems; facilitate the sharing of personal experience of mental health problems; and offer creative and interactive techniques and tools to promote self management of mental health to address personal and social barriers to successful rehabilitation.

Six peer supporters are engaged in training to equip and empower them for their new role in offering group and online peer support. They will also plan and deliver health and wellbeing social action and challenge days that benefit themselves, their peers, and their communities.

Laura Bush Youth Focus: North East Programmes Officer said "It's great to see how well the group are bonding, and how passionate they are in supporting others to deal with mental health in everyday settings"

Our Side by Side programme is for adults aged over 18 who have experienced the Criminal Justice System; specifically those either serving a Community Order or Prison Licence and supervised by DTV CRC in the Teesside area.

The peer support programme is funded by the Peer Support Grant Fund; run by Mind with funding from the Big Lottery Fund. The grants fund supports 45 Side by Side programmes working with adults (18 years and over) across England, with funded activity taking place in the twelve months October 2015 October 2016.

The key aims of the programme are to build an evidence base for the effectiveness of one to one, group and online peer support; and promote the value of peer support to those with experience of mental health problems, mental health service providers and commissioners.
