Safe in Tees Valley News

We are Girls Unltd…

Posted : 06/06/2016

A group of girls from across the Tees Valley have successfully completed Ambition’s Girls Unltd programme; an education, employability and enterprise project which aims to improve the motivation and career aspirations of young women living in deprived communities. Safe in Tees Valley lead the initiative locally, in partnership with the Corner House@Newtown, with funding from the Dulverton Trust.

The girls initially participated in a series of group work sessions which explored how their interests and skills could relate to future choices, goal setting, career pathways, role models and tackling barriers. The sessions were led by experienced female youth workers alongside peer mentors.

In the final part of the programme, the girls came together to explore what enterprise is all about and how they would go about setting up a business from an initial idea. After a morning of activities and workshops, the girls split off into teams and planned their own enterprise projects: we had a sweet cups team, a rainbow cookies project, iPhone case designers and a dance activity group. After exploring costs and marketing, the groups prepared a presentation for a dragons den style panel where they were all successful in receiving funding to try out their concepts. The projects themselves were an opportunity for the girls to build their confidence and gain valuable skills and knowledge useful for their future careers.

Each of the girls have received an ASDAN Self Development accreditation to acknowledge their hard work and a celebration event will mark their achievements later this month.

Feedback from participants:
‘I learned about how to overcome the barriers that we face and it was fun to think about what jobs I wanted to do in the future’
‘I liked meeting and making new friends and feeling accepted’.
‘I thought the programme was amazing because I don’t get into trouble as much as I did before I came’
‘I enjoyed meeting new people and learnt how to talk to new people.’
